A woman shared with me recently that she had a friend–an acquaintance really–an elderly woman, whose son had lived the homosexual lifestyle before his death years before. Although the two had known one another for a long time, neither had ever spoken of it–until the younger woman’s own son “came out.”
Longing for some understanding and perhaps some wisdom, the younger asked the older how she had dealt with her son’s sexual identity.
The older woman admitted, through sullen words and tear-filled eyes that day, that she had never spoken about it with anyone…ever. But in the safety of shared experience, these two mothers began to talk and to listen. They began to share their pain, their fears, and so many other hard emotions.
What had been a comfortable acquaintance became a true and deep friendship forged by the fire of shared pain. And on that day, the older woman began to experience healing for the first time.
